IND vs ENG: James Anderson Has A Psychological Advantage Over Virat Kohli – Rajkumar Sharma

Virat Kohli, James Anderson

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma said England pacer James Anderson will hold the advantage against his ward when the two face in the rescheduled fifth Test between England and India in Birmingham next month.

Anderson and Kohli garner the attention of their fans for the intriguing battles between them over the years. Kohli endured a nightmare during India’s tour of England in 2014, where he amassed 134 in 10 innings at 13.40. England pacer James Anderson dismissed Kohli four times in the five-match Test series. Kohli scored 19 runs in 50 balls off Anderson’s bowling.

Virat Kohli vs James Anderson: Who will have the last laugh?

The Indian batter overcame the challenges in the 2018 tour and came back to England an altogether different batsman in 2018, and finished the five-match Test series as the top run-scorer with a 593-run tally with two centuries and three fifties. This time he didn’t allow the England pacer to dismiss him once despite getting on for a few close calls.

In India’s tour of England 2021, Anderson got Kohli’s wicket on the first ball of their meeting as the England talisman forced the then India skipper to nick behind to send him packing for a golden duck. Anderson got the better of him in the third Test at Headingley in Leeds.

Anderson has a psychological advantage as well: Rajkumar Sharma

India are leading the five-match Test series 2-1 and the Rohit Sharma-led side is set to play a revamped England under Ben Stokes for the fifth rescheduled Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham from July 1 to July 5.  Rajkumar Sharma feels the 39-year-old Anderson will have the psychological advantage against Kohli in the fifth Test, which could be the final assessment for the duo given the former’s age.

“We will get to see a fantastic contest. Anderson has a psychological advantage as well, that he has dismissed Virat many times, especially in England, although he was not able to get him out in India. But what he did with Virat in England, especially in 2014, a psychological edge is definitely there,” Rajkumar Sharma told India News.

“I believe Anderson is a fantastic bowler and in English conditions, he is an exceptional bowler. The angles from which he bowls and the late swing he gets in England, any batter finds it difficult to play him,” he added.

Anderson recently became the first pace bowler to complete 650 Test dismissals during the England-New Zealand Test series. He is likely to sit out for the final Test in Leeds owing to struggles with his ankle. Surrey pacer Jamie Overton will replace Anderson in the third Test and make his debut for England in international cricket.

England captain Ben Stokes, on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, announced that veteran pacer James Anderson has been ruled out of the upcoming third Test against New Zealand after suffering from an ankle injury. England have won the first two Test matches of the series and will hope for a white-wash at Leeds, Headingley.

Stokes, who had himself been a concern after missing training through illness on Tuesday, came through a training session on Wednesday morning after linking up with the squad. Anderson claimed 11 wickets at 18.63 in the first two Tests to reaffirm his status as England’s attack leader.

The England management has decided to have hit sit out the third Test match against New Zealand to give him time to heal for the next week’s delayed fifth Test against India at Edgbaston, which gets underway three days after the conclusion of the Headingley match. England needs to win that Test match to draw level in the series which India currently leads 2-1.

“Unfortunately, Jimmy’s not pulled up as much as we’d like to so Jamie Overton is going to make his debut this week. It’s unfortunate for Jimmy, but we’ve got a massive test against India coming up as well. I’m not too sure how serious it is to be honest. He’s just got a bit of a puffy ankle,” Stokes told Sky Sports.

Under the previous regime, Stuart Broad might have been considered for a rest after back-to-back fixtures, but in keeping with England’s new policy of picking their best available XI for each game, he will continue as the seam attack’s senior presence.

Jamie Overton To Make His Test Debut; However, Craig Overton Remains On Sidelines

In James Anderson’s place, fast bowler Jamie Overton will make his Test debut. However, this means England will not, after all, field twins in the same Test for the first time in their history, with Jamie’s brother Craig remaining on the sidelines.

“Jamie’s been very impressive, the way that he’s bowled. We always want a point of difference in our side, bowling with serious pace and changing games as well. That’s the only change this week. As tempting as it was to get both twins out there playing for England, Jamie’s the only change,” Stokes added.

Jamie Overton’s debut comes four-and-a-half years after his brother Craig made his first England Test appearance. He is being rewarded for his performance for Surrey where he has claimed 21 wickets at 21, and consistently bowled in excess of 90mph/145kph.

ENG vs NZ: England Batting Coach Marcus Trescothick Tests Positive For Covid-19 Ahead Of 3rd Tes

Marcus Trescothick

After testing positive for Covid-19, Marcus Trescothick was unable to join the England squad in Leeds. Trescothick, the men’s batting coach for England, has remained at home in Somerset, isolating himself. His comeback to the squad has not yet been decided.

Ben Stokes was also absent from England’s training session in Leeds on Tuesday (June 21). The England captain was also sick, but his Covid test came back negative. The team management is hopeful that he will be able to train again on Wednesday (June 22). Since Stokes’ appointment, no vice-captain has been named. Stokes will not be re-tested until he exhibits new symptoms on Wednesday. No additional players will be evaluated unless they exhibit symptoms.

Six members of the New Zealand touring group have tested positive in recent weeks including four players and two backroom staff – but they are all available for the third LV= Insurance Test.

James Anderson Might Not Feature In Third Test

There may also be some doubts regarding James Anderson’s fitness coming into the third Test. Anderson did take a short bowling session in training on Tuesday (June 21), but he looked far from his best, with whispers circulating around the squad that he is suffering from an ankle ailment.

England are reportedly considering leaving him out in order to have him fully healthy for the long-awaited final Test of the India series, which begins on July 1 at Edgbaston. There will only be three days between games if the Leeds Test lasts five days. If Anderson is absent, Jamie Overton is set to get into the England lineup. England are also considering resting Stuart Broad, if that happens Jamie’s twin brother Craig Overton might play as well.

It must be mentioned that Joe Root might captain England again if Stokes remains unavailable for the third Test.
