As England gears up for the 3rd Test against India at Headingley in Leeds, they will observe a lot of changes in the playing XI. Firstly, pacer Mark Wood has been ruled out of India vs England 3rd Test due to a shoulder injury. Former England cricketer Steve Harmison feels that the Joe Root-led side will replace Mark Wood with Craig Overton in the next game against India.

England has also roped in Dawid Malan instead of opener Dom Sibley for the third Test. Sibley has struggled with the bat in the series so far, registering scores of 28, 11, 18, and 0 in the four-Test innings he batted so far. Steve Harmison also feels that Malan will bring a lot of experience to the England team and the team can call on his experience.

Mark Wood Ruled Out Of India vs England 3rd Test

While speaking to ESPNcrininfo, Harmison revealed that Mark Wood will be out of the 3rd Test but is hopeful for returning in the 4th Test. He also feels that Craig Overton will replace Mark Wood in England’s playing XI in Leeds.

“Mark Wood is out. I got a few texts since the morning that he is still struggling. He will miss this Test match but is hopeful of playing next Test match which is good news. I am not so sure about Saqib Mahmood but England will play all of Ollie Pope, Craig Overton and Dawid Malan”, Steve Harmison said.

Harmison also feels that Dawid Malan will bat at no.3 after replacing Dom Sibley in the squad and his experience will be helpful for England.

“Yeah I think he {Dawid Malan} will go at no.3. He brings experience, and that’s all you can call on him at this moment. England have got David Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Ollie Pope and Sam Curran. That will be five players who have only one red-ball innings between them during English summer.

“So, this shows where is England team is from the preparation point of view. But what Malan do is that he brings experience. He has been in Test cricket before and you can call on his experience. Hopefully, he will give a commendable influence at no.3 because England’s one, two, three have been a bit of a shameful in recent past”, Harmison further said.

Joe Root and co. are down 0-1 in the five-match Test series after losing the 2nd Test against India by 151 runs. Unfortunately for England, their few prime Test players have been ruled out in ongoing India’s tour. Jofra Archer, who is undergoing treatment for an elbow injury, has been ruled out from playing for the entire 2021.

After the 1st Test, pacer Stuart Broad was ruled out due to injury. Now, Mark Wood’s departure from the 3rd Test will definitely hamper England’s bowling attack in the next clash. England and India are set to lock horns in the 3rd Test in Headingly, Leeds. The encounter will begin on August 25 (Wednesday).
