Former New Zealand cricketer Simon Doull said that Black Caps captain Kane Williamson’s runs will be important for the team in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
Williamson is considered as New Zealand’s best batsman whose guile to score runs in the toughest conditions and against the strongest bowling attacks makes him exceptional.
Kane Williamson’s ability to play spin is brilliant: Simon Doull
Given that New Zealand are missing the ranks of power-hitters like Colin de Grandhomme and senior batsman Ross Taylor, there will be an added responsibility on Williamson’s shoulders to score runs.
Williamson has scored 1805 runs from 65 innings at an average of 31.66. Spinners will be very effective in the middle overs as they get favourable assistance from the UAE pitches as was evident in IPL 2021.
Doull reckoned that Williamson plays spinners better and his role as a batsman will be more impactful for the team than his captaincy in the showpiece event.
“Importance of Kane Williamson -the batsman, I think is crucial. His captaincy will take care of itself, he’s got good leaders, experienced players around him in that T20 squad. His runs are vitally important for New Zealand, lot of teams have picked spinners, his ability to play spin is brilliant,” Doull told Deep Dasgupta on the latter’s YouTube channel.
New Zealand have been consistent in ICC events: Deep Dasgupta
New Zealand won the inaugural edition of the ICC World Test Championship final against India in June.
The Black Caps have ended as the runners-up of the ICC World Cup in 2015 & 2019.
Dasgupta noted that New Zealand are consistent when it comes to ICC tournaments and thinks their bowling will be the key in the current edition of World T20.
“New Zealand have been consistent in ICC events. Have gone under the radar at times. There might be not many big names, but they are a solid outfit. I think they have a good bowling unit. They have experience in Boult and Southee, express pace in Milne and Ferguson so there is variety, even in the spin bowling. Top order batting is also good. But the real concern is the middle order, there is no experience and rhythm,” Dasgupta said.
New Zealand is paired with India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and two more teams yet to be qualified in the Group 2 of the Super 12 stage.
The Black Caps start their campaign against Pakistan on October 26 in Sharjah.
