Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batsman Jason Roy made his debut for the side on Monday and immediately had a match-winning impact against Rajasthan Royals (RR). He scored a blazing fifty which propelled SRH to a comfortable win.

It was their second win of the tournament in 10 matches, a season which is turning out to be one of their worst. David Warner was dropped from the playing XI due to his poor performances and Roy was given a chance.

He made the most of it and looks set to continue opening for SRH in the remainder of the games. Roy’s 60 along with Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 51* ensured that RR succumbed to their sixth defeat of the season.

Makes me extremely happy. Really grateful for the opportunity from Sunrisers. Have been training, and waiting hard. Grateful for this award too – we had some great performances today. Happy to get over the line,” Roy said while collecting the Man of the Match award.

Despite the win, SRH needs to continue performing out of their skins and hope for a few results to go their way if they are to qualify for the playoffs. They can mathematically make it but a lot is dependent on other matches. Jason Roy was happy with his performance but reckoned the side will have to restart once more in the next game.

I had to kind of access different areas. Wasn’t as free-flowing the way I hope. It was a case of getting the team close to the total. Saha was instrumental in that partnership. Allowed me to relax early on. We’ve got to keep our feet very grounded. We’ve had a tough tournament, but to come out today to chase a decent total was hugely impressive. We need to do the basics all over again,” he said.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will next face table-toppers Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on September 30 while Rajasthan Royals meet Royal Challengers Bangalore on September 29.
