IPL 2021: Having Mohammed Shami In The Team Is A Really Big Advantage – Arshdeep Singh

Punjab Kings (PBKS) pacer Arshdeep Singh has gone from strength to strength since the last IPL season. He picked 9 wickets in 8 matches last year, and has now bagged 16 scalps this season, including a five-wicket haul versus Rajasthan Royals.

He gives a lot of his success’ credit to teammate Mohammed Shami, who, he says, had told him to ” keep things simple”. The 22-year-old revealed that Shami had encouraged him ahead of the season’s start and has been impressed with his skillset.

“Having Shami bhai in the team is a really big advantage. He has told me to keep things simple. He said, ‘everyone tells you to do this, do that. You have got good skills and you just have to back yourself’,” Arshdeep Singh told Times Of India.

Arshdeep Singh was part of the India squad, which toured Sri Lanka in July. He was initially one of the five reserve bowlers and was later promoted to the main squad when several players were put in isolation. He, however, didn’t get to make his India debut.

I enjoy bowling in the death overs: Arshdeep Singh

His death bowling this season has been largely impressive. The left-arm pacer has made smart adjustments to the conditions in India and the UAE while displaying his repertoire of variations – from bowling with the new ball inside the powerplay to slower balls and cutters to yorkers.

“I enjoy bowling in the death overs. I have worked on that aspect with my coach Jaswant Rai. I practice with a cone placed at one end of the pitch. I try to hit there bowling with the new balls, use cutters in the middle overs and then finishing with some yorkers.

Punjab Kings are on the brink of being eliminated from the playoff race. They have 10 points in 13 matches; a poor net run rate means they are likely to finish in the bottom half of the table but only for a miracle. They face Chennai Super Kings on Thursday in Dubai.
