Sunrisers Hyderabad finally won a match after suffering five losses in a row in IPL 2021 this year. But more than the victory, the talk was revolving around opening batsman David Warner’s absence at the Dubai International Stadium.
On Monday, Kane Williamson-led SRH defeated Rajasthan Royals by seven wickets as Warner was dropped for England opener Jason Roy, who made his first appearance for the franchise after sitting out in nine matches.
Roy smashed 60 runs 42 balls with the help of eight boundaries and a six as the Orange Army completed the 165-run chase in 18.3 overs with skipper Williamson remaining unbeaten on 51.
David Warner wasn’t the only experienced player that we had left back at the hotel: Trevor Bayliss
Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Trevor Bayliss explained that Warner wasn’t the only senior player to be left behind and there can be a possibility that the Australian player might not play in the remaining four games of the season.
“We can’t make the finals, so we made a decision to get the youngsters to experience not just the matches, but time around the ground and around the set-up. And for this match we made a decision…he wasn’t the only experienced player that we’d left back at the hotel,” Trevor Bayliss said in a post-match press conference.
“We’ve had a number of young players who haven’t even been to the ground, even our reserves, we wanted to give them the opportunity to come along and experience a game. That might continue for a few more games. We don’t know… we’ve got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and pick a squad of 18. That’s just the way it is. Dave’s obviously watching the game at the hotel and giving his support to the boys. Just like everyone else. We’re all in this together,” he added.
David Warner has been a great contributor to Hyderabad for a number of years: Trevor Bayliss
Warner was removed from the captaincy after SRH could only register one win in the first leg of IPL 2021 and Williamson was reinstated back to the role. Warner’s omission in the playing XI for the second time since he was axed from the captaincy role makes his future look uncertain with the Hyderabad outfit.
Bayliss said that the team has not discussed that aspect yet but called Warner a great contributor to the team.
“Look, that certainly hasn’t been discussed. This is the last year before the mega auction, those decisions will be made further down the line. He’s been a great contributor to Hyderabad for a number of years now and he’s very well-respected. And with the number of runs he’s scored, I’m sure he’s got a lot more runs in him in the IPL,” Bayliss mentioned.
Under David Warner’s captaincy, Sunrisers Hyderabad lifted the 2016 IPL title after they defeated Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in the final.
