A close encounter ended with Kolkata Knight Riders defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 4 wickets in in the Eliminator on Monday in Sharjah to knock Virat Kohli’s side out of the tournament and proceed to book a date with the Delhi Capitals in Qualifier 2.

Chasing 139, KKR’s innings got off to a sedate start with 19 runs in the first three overs, before Shubman Gill charged down at George Garton with three boundaries in the fourth. Gill fell to Harshal Patel in the sixth over as KKR ended the powerplay at 48/1.

In the seventh, Rahul Tripathi was trapped lbw, with the help of a DRS by RCB, by Yuzvendra Chahal. Nitish Rana then clubbed Glenn Maxwell for a six and a four, but he lost Venkatesh Iyer at the other end, who edged behind off Patel.

When the match seemed in balance with RCB picking wickets, Sunil Narine came in and put KKR on the front, clattering three sixes to Dan Christian in the 12th over, bringing the required rate down to less than 6 per over.

RCB then remained alive in the game with Chahal dismissing Rana (23 off 25), and Siraj castling Narine (26 off 15) and nicking off Dinesh Karthik (10 off 12). The equation for KKR came down to needing 12 runs in the last two overs.

Garton bowled a brilliant last over, conceding 5 runs. With 7 needed off 6 balls, Shakib scooped Christian for a boundary over short fine leg. Three singles in the next three balls completed the job for KKR.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, Virat Kohli made his intentions clear, stroking three fours in the first two overs. Devdutt Padikkal then took two boundaries off Lockie Ferguson.

Mavi leaked 13 runs in the fifth over. But Lockie Ferguson, in the sixth over, dismissed Padikkal(21 off 18), who edged a fast delivery onto his stumps. RCB capped off the powerplay at 53/1.

KKR spinners further squeezed RCB’s innings with four boundaryless overs, during which Kohli survived a run-out and KS Bharat was given a life by Dinesh Karthik with a missed stumping.

Sunil Narine struck in the 10th over with the wicket of Bharat, who holed out to long-off, scoring 9 runs off 16 balls. RCB reached 70/2 at the 10-over mark and needed their three star batsmen to take them to a defendable total. However, it was Narine who was standing in their way.

Narine struck with gold in the 13th over, castling Kohli (39 off 33), who missed a slog sweep. Two overs later, Narine bowled AB de Villiers as well, massively denting RCB’s chances of reaching 160. In the 17th, the West Indian spinner also got rid of Maxwell. Cameos from Shahbaz Ahmed, Christian, and Harshal Patel took RCB to 138.

Twitter was buzzing, hailing KKR’s brilliant turnaround this season, while this loss also ended an era for RCB under the captaincy of Virat Kohli.
