Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon suffered a mild concussion while playing in a New South Wales’ intra-squad match on Tuesday. However, he has been cleared to play in the Sheffield Shield opening match.

Lyon sustained the blow while fielding on the first day of the three-day trial match that’s taking place at Hurstville Oval, Cricket NSW confirmed. It’s only a precautionary measure given the Aussie spinner is a big part of their Ashes squad.

He withdrew from the match but will be available for the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria starting on October 27 at Drummoyne Oval. The two teams will play back-to-back matches to begin their Shield season. Following the games, Nathan Lyon should be available for The Ashes 2021-22.

James Pattinson retires from Tests ahead of Ashes

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson has announced his retirement from Test cricket. His career was filled with persistent bouts of injury and Pattinson was never able to fully develop his potential.

The hardest part as you get older is that you want to try and enjoy your cricket as well. You put all your attention into playing cricket for Australia and at some stage, that finishes.

This year is a big one for me if I can crack in and try and get an opportunity at the Test level. If not then I probably wouldn’t mind just looking to try and enjoy my cricket somewhere towards the back-end of my career,” Pattinson had told Cricket Australia website recently.

Pattinson picked 81 wickets in 21 Tests at an average of 26.33. His final Test series was against New Zealand at home back in 2019/2020.
