Sri Lanka will play their third match of the qualifying round of ICC T20 World Cup 2021 against the Netherlands on Friday. Sri Lanka are currently sitting at the top of the Group A table with two wins in two matches.
While they have booked their spot for the Super 12 stage, they would want to finish the qualifying round with a win against the Netherlands.
Sri Lanka are coming into this game on the back of an impressive 70-run win over Ireland. They didn’t start their innings too well, having lost three wickets for just 8 runs inside the first two overs. However, Wanindu Hasaranga then joined hands with Pathum Nissanka to lead Sri Lanka’s recovery.
The two stitched a brilliant 123-run partnership for the fourth wicket to help the team reach a competitive score. Nissanka scored 61 runs off 47 balls, while Hasaranga amassed 71 off 47. Sri Lanka, as a result of that, finished their innings at 171 runs in the first innings.
Mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana, once again, was brilliant with the ball as he kept batsmen guessing with his guile and turn.
He bowled the first over of the innings and sent Kevin O’Brien back to hut. Paul Sterling followed him in the next over to leave Ireland reeling at 18 for 2. The bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals as Ireland never looked like in the chase. A collective bowling effort helped Sri Lanka bundle out Ireland for just 106 runs in the second innings.
Facing them are the Netherlands, who are out of the race for the Super 12. They have played two matches and lost both of them. Unlike their first game, the Netherlands batted well in the last game. Riding on a stellar knock from Max ODowd, the Dutch nation notched a competitive 164-run total in the first innings.
Ackermann (35 off32) and Scott Edwards (21 off 11) also made valuable contributions in the latter half of the innings. However, despite that, they went on to lose the game, courtesy of a sensational unbeaten 66-run knock in 40 balls from David Wiese.
The Netherlands had the upper till until the halfway mark of the second innings. They had reduced Namibia to 52 for 3 inside the first nine overs.
However, Wiese’s carnage in the second half of the innings took the game away from them. Nevertheless, they would look to end their campaign with a win on Friday.
