Former World Cup-winning Indian opener, Gautam Gambhir, stated that bringing in MS Dhoni as a mentor was a great move as he can share his experiences of playing in the big ICC tournaments with the youngsters in the team.

When BCCI announced India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup, it was a big but welcome surprise when Dhoni was named as the mentor. Ahead of the World Cup, Gambhir reveals why Dhoni’s presence in the dressing room will benefit the Indian team.

To share his experience with some of the young guys who are playing their first World Cup, which is going to be very important because playing in the World Cup is a completely different piece.

“So, you would need that experienced person who’s been there and done that. MS could definitely try and share all his experiences with some of the young cricketers,” Gambhir said in a chat on Star Sports.

“Virat Kohli winning as captain will be the icing on the cake” – Gautam Gambhir

The upcoming T20 World Cup will be Virat Kohli’s first and last tournament as captain in the T20I format. His primary goal will be leading India to their first ICC tournament win in over eight years, as Gambhir said.

All he would be looking for is to win the T20 competition, and I’m sure that the entire team will be looking to do that as well because it’s been a long 14 years of wait.

I’m sure that it’s not only about Virat Kohli that he’s going to be captaining India for the last time in the T20 format. It’s about just winning the tournament, and him winning as captain will be icing on the cake,” Gambhir added.

India will play two warmup matches against England and Australia on October 18 and 20 respectively. Then, they will begin the Super-12 stage with a match against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.
