South African player Aiden Markram took a stunning diving catch in the deep to dismiss the well-set Australian batsman, Steve Smith, back to the hut. The two sides are engaged in the first match of the Super 12 stage in Abu Dhabi.
Chasing a modest target of 119, Australia found itself in trouble. They lost Aaron Finch, Mitchell Marsh, and David Warner in the first ten overs with the score reading 51/3. It was up to in-form batsman, Glenn Maxwell, and Smith to build a partnership.
They slowly piled up the runs with an occasional boundary but the pace wasn’t enough. The required run rate was shooting up and the batsmen began to feel the pressure. Smith felt like he had to do something and he decided to take the pacers on, partly because the spinners were doing a great job.
Anrich Nortje was brought in and Smith took him on. He smacked a boundary off the 4th ball of the fifteenth over but succumbed to the very next ball. Smith attempted a pull but wasn’t able to middle it. The ball flew into the vacant cow corner region where Aiden Markram zipped across and dove to take a stunning catch.
Smith had to depart after scoring a 34-ball 35 and couldn’t take his side over the line. It was a big moment in the game as Australia suddenly found themselves at 80/4 with very few batsmen left to follow.
